It’s not that I don’t like wedding photography or wedding photographers or the industry as a whole, it’s just that I don’t really fit in. I’m not great at gushing over flower choices or dress colours or shoes. I don’t always remember to get you to straighten your tie or remind you to touch up your eye make up. And I don’t love, LOVE.
It’s not that I haven’t tried. The problem for me is that it just feels so inauthentic. It’s not who I am. When I come to a shoot, I bring my whole self. Nothing more, nothing less and what I LOVE is story. I’m not going to capture a perfect day because guess what, it’s not going to be perfect. It’s going to be great sure, but not perfect. And that is what makes a good story… imperfections.
Of course an important part of documenting the day is to capture all the details that the couple puts their time and heart into: all those hours of planning to make sure this event represents the people they are and the connection they share. I get that. I’ve also been at enough weddings to know that what makes a day unique, is the unplanned moments: those times that they forget they’re dressed up and they’re just themselves. Together. Surrounded by all the people they love.
Capturing those moments isn’t “wedding photography”, it’s not some special combination of glitter and gush. It’s just photography. It’s finding the story, getting drawn into it and learning how to tell it through images the best way I know how.
